It was a triumphant weekend for Simon Fraser University (SFU) athletes at the GNAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships, with sophomore Marie-Éloïse Leclair leading the pack. As the Women’s Track Athlete of the Meet, Leclair repeated as the 100-meter and 200-meter champion, shattering her own records and earning a spot at the NCAA Championships. Her victories were part of a haul of six individual women’s event championships claimed by SFU on the day.

Leclair Sets the Pace

Leclair’s dominance in the sprints was unquestionable. After breaking her own records in the 100 meters with a prelim time of 11.44 and finals time of 11.47, she secured the championship title and an automatic qualification for the NCAA Championships. She also cruised to victory in the 200 meters, clocking in at 24.12 seconds.

SFU Women’s Dominance

In addition to Leclair’s sprinting prowess, SFU athletes excelled in a variety of events. Sophomore Claire Bosma won the 400 meters with an impressive 57.20 seconds, securing a provisional qualifying mark for the NCAA Championships. Erica Binder added to the medal tally, claiming the GNAC title in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:01.75.

The Red Leafs also reigned supreme in the relay events. The 4×100-meter relay team of Diana Voloshin, Leclair, Emma Cannan, and Jaeland Cummings ran the top time in the GNAC this season, finishing in 46.41 seconds. The 4×400-meter relay team of Cannan, Bosma, Binder, and Leclair won in a commanding time of 3:48.45.

SFU Men’s Highlights

The men’s side had plenty to celebrate as well. SFU sophomore Jesaiah Penson-McCoy was named the Men’s Track Athlete of the Meet after a stellar performance in the 200 meters (21.55 seconds) and a commendable third-place finish in the 100 meters (10.68 seconds). Charlie Dannatt also added to the SFU success, pulling away from the field in the final 200 meters to win the 800 meters with a time of 1:49.88.

Nationally ranked javelin thrower Bryan Cortes narrowly missed out on the top spot, coming second with a throw of 60.34m, just behind a Western Washington athlete.

Awaiting the NCAA Championships

With a successful weekend behind them, SFU athletes now await the announcement of the fields for the 2023 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Regardless of the outcome, their performance at the GNAC Championships is a testament to their hard work, dedication, and #RepTheLeaf spirit.
